Jesus never used Christian to refer to himself and his followers, because he was a Jew he still practicing Torah. “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. (Mat 5:17) The word Christian was first used to refer the followers of Jesus around 40 AD by Paul when he and Barnabas were in the city of Antioch. This group became known as Christians. Jesus himself never called himself a Christian. The term used in the era when Jesus was alive was Nazarene, because he came from Nazareth. This name was also applied to the followers of Jesus by the Judeans. In a way, this is the name for the early followers of Jesus who were later considered heretics by the church father Epiphanius for continuing to keep the law of Moses. |
